I have been considering an OSG 5spd upgrade and was wondering what kind of pricing people have been finding ?

Is $2800 USD + shipping (from the US) decent for an OSG 5spd kit w/hardened input shaft ?

If anyone has found a better deal, let me know.

Thanks,
Allan.

Where did you find a price like that?

check these guys out: http://www.apexperformance.co.uk/ppg/products.htm#nissan

they seem to have some good products and good reviews... not sure about prices though. Although i think its worth checking out because i haven't heard many good things about os giken lately.

PPG has a great reputation, but make very expensive gear sets. What have you heard that wasn't good about OS Giken? I have been only hearing good things.

you're greatly limited in shifting speed with the osg gear set, If drag or track is what you are after.

Not to mention theo woollett broke countless gear sets while he was still trying to run them with under 650hp.

Wow thats good information. I would like to see the failures.

Although I dont know theo woollett nor his build, but it's possible that an OS gearset could fail if he wasn't using the redsigned-type OEM Nissan components that the OS Giken gearset requires, and is listed in the instruction manual.

From OS Giken:
"Regarding gearsets and failures, the gear technically should be strong enough to handle that level of power. We do know, however, that the transmission case does begin to flex at high levels of HP. Even if the gears can hold, if the case flexes its over. Please have your high hp customers consider installing the OS re-enforced center plate to added transmission assembly rigidity.

Regarding “quick shifting”, the transmission gears have nothing to do with that. The close ratio gears are meant to make first gear track usable and to keep the car in its optimum level in the power band during upshifts."

dogbox ftw... Allan, sounds like you are spending a lot of money on this project and it sounds like all quality parts, have you consider going with dog engagement?

My car is a daily driver in the summer and I really don't wanna be "Geary McGrinderson" all over town in traffic.........lol

If anything, I will probably just go Getrag and call it a day, maybe not right away, but that's what I will end up with a couple trannys down the road.

I won't have the cash anyways to do it, which is why I am staying twin turbo for a while longer, because the rest of the car wont be able to handle the power and I have to play catchup all over the place.

I see a BCNR33 5spd in my near future though to start off with (after my current tranny packs it in)....unless I can get a smokin deal on an OSG upgrade first that is.

I think that people don't understand that if you still keep the synchromesh system you will never end up shifting the gear faster. A synchro need a minimum amount of time to complete its operations and if you try do it faster that's where you punch it. I'm sure that that the OSG gear set can last long if you drive it consciously. For sure your lap time is not faster but you cross the finish line.

I suggest also looking into the PPG gears.

The GTR that just ran a 9.67 back east was running gears 1-4 I belive.

precisely, which means good bye gear set when you start driving it hard

After chatting with Ryan (RWDragoon/Vex Performance) I am confident that an OSG 5-Gear kit with hardened input shaft and OSG strengthened center plate will do the job for my needs.....along with my existing OSG Tripple Plate clutch ;)

Like you guys said, drive it like a syncromesh and it will last, not to mention, the combination I mentioned above is the most cost effective tranny upgrade I can do for the dollars involved.

These are decent as well... but i believe they are ridiculously over priced.

I have seen $2680.00 USD + shipping for the 5 speed w/input shaft and $860.00 for the center plate.

Very nice setup but PPG is my first option.
