View Full Version : What did you do to your car today?

I work on mine everyday just about.
What did you do to yours today?
Today I diagnosed and fixed my blue smoke problem. I got my greddu suction kit all on, and I had blocked off my exhaust valve pcv valve. ... When I really jammed on it and the crank case pressured up, oil would squirt out onto the exhaust and burn off bigtime blue.
So that was nice to fix :)
what about you guys
inspected my turbos -> thankfully they are in perfect shape, ripped apart my head to find that an intake valve guide broke. my head is now bare.

Nothing :( Nobody in this city seems to carry mandrel bent tubing at a decent price. One shop said $145 for a 3 inch diameter 90 degree bend with 6 inch legs...
However I did wash my truck, forgot it was light grey.

Well I only get to work on mine on weekends for a few hrs...
Today:
test fitted wheels since there has been suspension changes
cleaned out more pieces of broken plastic and power steering belt from the engine bay.
Re located heater controls under cd player.
Made a triple gauge din plate to go in place of heater controls
wired up gauge back lights, and wired up volt meter.
finally wired parking brake wire to turbo timer
fixed grounding issue on my sirius radio, re-routed sirius controller wire
cleaned the interior thoroughly... glass was disgusting...
next:
GTR CAMS!!!!

Don't you have a Lordco? 3" mandrels are about $35 with account pricing. I think they are a Walker product. They are a 180 deg. with 6" legs. I made up an entire GTS-T downpipe with one.

Well I was going to get someone to build it for me, but I can't stand giving someone the keys to my car. So I'm going to build the downpipe and take it to a shop come spring to join it to my exhaust.
I paid 25 for three 45 degree bends and one 90 degree. 3 inch stainless mandrel tubing, so a pretty good deal. Like $25 for a new saw blade and I have a friend welding it up for a 6 pack. That's all it cost me, cheap!
Some progress:

If you have removed the whole dealio from behind the dash, I removed the grommets that are already in there and put in some rubber differential plugs from a dodge truck. worked perfect. Canuck tire should have them but I found them at napa when I was trying to do the same thing.
The truck is getting new exhaust gaskets today woo.

I have rust at the jacking points and Im thinking I'll have to have that section cut out and replaced with a section from a parts car. Thats my project for the spring. Do you think that would be hard to do? I would be the front jacking points
Kyle
I'm sure it's possible but at the same time you have to ask yourself if it's worth it for a little rust that you can probably grind off and paint with a rust treatment
I will wait and if mg y rust gets back to the point it's actually spreading and causing damage to get it fixed by a body shop or something - right now its just minor annoyiance
DrMango
03-01-2010, 06:30 PM
no its been crushed in from the last guy that owned the car. Its slowly started to get more rust over the last couple years because I drove my car during the winter a little last year.
The metal is bent and needs to be replaced either way. Should be pretty easy for a body shop I would guess?

03-03-2010, 05:12 PM
I certianly won't be rolling any fenders mostly because the paint on the car is virtually perfect and I don't want it cracked.
I won't be putting spacers in either mostly because I think they're just plain wrong and, like I said earlier, I'd like them in a bit further.
It's still going to be about another month before it's ready for the road so I'm going to leave the suspension as is, see how it settles and if it doesn't rub I may lower it some more.
Thanks for the input guys! Always appreciated!

Are you serious ? What, do you think that the spacers are going to push the wheel FURTHER INSIDE and save you from rolling the fender ? ARE YOU SERIOUS YOU STUPID FUCKING IDIOT ?
What in the fuck is ROLLING THE FENDERS going to do to help a wheel that sits TOO FAR INSIDE AND NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT FORWARD MORE ? What ? create even MORE space to fill and look worse ?

I thought they were an OK tire and that is it. I ran starspecs I borrowed for a few weeks and they were much much better. But for the price, I think they are bang for the buck. However the 615 were way better than the fk452s I had as well. This year I'm looking into some of those BFG KDW tires.
I put my back seats back in last night. I sat in the back and felt like a dictator. I also set up my ECU for boost control...should be interesting.

wheelsnext has really low pricing, but I think customs brokerage and duty or whatever might ruin your margins. 1010tires is based in vancouver, their prices are a bit higher, but low hassel.

Based in vancouver. They are quick, and reply to emails within 2 hours all the time for me. When I ordered the winters for my truck the supplier was out and they still got to me in 4 days.
I did a LOT today whoa.
On my car I got the IC brackets finished up, interior is in, wastegate plumbing all done, base timing set PROPERLY, vvt setup on the ECU and the wiring for the boost controller all sorted.
I wired a relay on a friends supra for the fuel pump, and wired up a stepper motor.

Had my car flat decked to the autoclub and my father and I put a new OS GIken twin disk in. Sadly there was a NISMO twin disk in there reduced to dust! Also put all new stainless lines in.
Should only be another few weeks before she's alive again!
looped rear PS line through cooler, installed new shift and ebrake boots, removed front fenders and found what looks to be after market chassis braces (see car thread for pic)

Don't know why you wanna add so much unsprung mass to your car. If you're just going for a look then fill your boots. If you're looking for grip that's not the best way to do it.
Your speedo will be close (assuming an 18" wheel). You'll only be out about .5% in your overall diameter.

More tire=more tread contact=more grip, right? But more tire=more weight.
Or should you be mathing the tire size, to weight of the car, and any extra tire, will end up extra mass to control, and it will throw the grip to weight ratio off?

and yes, wider the tire does not mean better anyways.
Garage Saraus did a crazy lap on BNR32 with 265's I believe.

Good to know. I vowed that I'd stay with 17s to save weight but for some reason I got carried away and ended up with what I've got now.
That being said... IMO you don't need tires that wide to get more traction.
I think you'd be better off spending the money on suspension upgrades or a torque split controller to get better handling.
Also with looking at what I have left for space you're gonna have to be rolling lips, probably rubbing at full lock (probably before) and hydroplaning like crazy.
If you're looking for best performance take a look at what the time attack cars are using for tire sizes. I think you'll see most cars staying with a 40 series.
My 2 cents worth!

I'm considering running 265/35 now with a bit of a stretch actually... seems like a lot of guys in japan run that size for time attack
Also your star specs are a really nice tire, which is why I'm stepping down in size a tiny bit so I can buy a way nicer tire

Then it's just a coolant flush, oil flush and change, tranny fluid change, diff oil changes, xfer case fluid change and she'll be ready to go!
BTW if you have a lot of cars to maintain or you change brake fluid often this is a rig you need to have, takes NO TIME to do a fluid change.

Seems that I am leaking from injector to manifold as Deatschwerks' supplied seals are too short and don't press firmly against the manifold.

Hmm.. Looks like I have to get some OEM bottom seals.
It's not squishing as it should, it still has a good .5mm play opposed to a nice squeeze.
So, for tech info. Ask for OEM o-rings with your deatschwerks injectors.

I've been trying to fix my car for a while now... It runs, but I can't really drive it.
I'm not going to mention any names, but last time I went to work, I left a non running skyline in my parents driveway. I had just done the meat of the engine swap, but had a few small things to button up. My parents demanded that the car be moved, so i got a friend to come over and finish up what needed to be done and move the car.
Well, now that I'm back and trying to figure out what happened, I'm finding that every piece of hardware is stripped and crossthreaded... I'm so pissed. The most important piece is the Driveshaft bearing that bolts to the bottom of the car before the U Joint in the shaft. I was able to re-tap the hole on one side and get the proper bolt in there, but the other side has a threaded stud that is part of the chassis. This thing is ruined! At what point do you finally realize that you shouldn't need 100 foot pounds of tourque to turn the nut onto the first 4 threads? I might now have to weld the thing to the bottom of the car because i cant re-thread this thing, it's too far gone. The problem is that I can't drive the car with the driveshaft flopping around under there, so I need a welder to come to me... I don't know what I'm going to do, but I go back to work on April 12th and I can't leave my car in my parents driveway again.

I sorted the same issue a few weeks ago on a gts, I just drilled his hangar bracket out, and drilled the chassis and re-tapped larger. I think it was m12x1.5 I tapped it? Don't quote me on that size but it is totally fixable.
Since said person I helped originally screwed it up, he never bothered to fix it for almost a month (Yes. I KNOW, wow.) And drove it like that for a month. If he can do that, I wouldn't be too afraid to move the car very briefly with one bolt in. Super sketchy...but do able.

Yeah, the white one too. I just like black wheels hehe. I've been looking for tires today, with a 275 40 17, the overall height is just over 35 inches. Sound like too much? The sidewall is 4.33 inches. Sound like too much? I got 17x9, and am having trouble finding 275 35, or 265 40
275 is pretty big for 9" wheels isn't it?
I'm running 235 on my 17x8. Wanted to do 245 but didn't. Since there's 24mm in an inch I guess you could go up that far. It would be a tight fit though.
Best of luck. And pics when you git 'er done.
I ran 255/40 on my 17x9 and they fit nicely - I don't think I'd go any bigger on a 9" rim.

Teehee. We'll see. 275/25.4= 10.8 inches of rubber. Won't be too bad.
Put in a new deck today. Looks/works sweet.
Pulled out one of my electric rad fans. The fan was held in place by the foam cover on the lower AC line, and it unsrewed the nut. Then proceeded to bounce the nut and fan around fucking up a ton of fins on my rad before I noticed the horrible sound while the car was timing out. Fucking piece of shit. Now I'm running 1 12" fan til I pull the rad to remount it. Fucker. (I'm angry).
Then I mounted my red titek extended/open-ended studs, and decided I didn't like them, so I took them all off.
Then I took my sub out of my brothers car and put it back in mine. Bastard kept trying to keep it.
And along the process of wiring up the sub and grabbing random shit out of my trunk and putting it in the garage I managed to notice that the car has Kenwood components in the rear. Pretty pumped about that.

there is no way to tuck that closer to the floor board? That is how you crack manifolds quickly.

Engine bay all assembled (except for fuel rail, still waiting) all new valve cover grommets, new injector seals, oil changed, ATTTESSA flushed, brakes/clutch flushed, and the intake manifold is back on. Ready to flash 'er up as soon as I get the fuel rail. Should be monday!

I thought flushing out the winter antifreeze mix for water wetter / water combo would be an easy task...nope.
After I flushed out the old antifreeze and filled it back up with water to flush the rad out again, I started up the car and my self locking doors were locked by my alarm with the engine running.....sweeeet! So no big deal I'll just use my spare key tucked away....nope......its gone now....fuck. So I unplug the maf to kill the engine and pull my fuel pump fuse because it's running full tilt. 30 minutes later with a coat hanger.......booya....I'm in!
I'm draining the water again and while I tighten the drain up I hear...ka dunk...dunk dunk. I get up to take a look and the nismo rad cap is gone...arrrggghhhhh. I looked for 45 minutes and finally give up. I have a spare rad cap in the garage, I'll just use that. I find the old stock rad....no cap. I'm loosing it at this point so I chuck the rad across the yard...what else is in my site..a fan and a koyo rad box so I chuck those too.
I call the wife out to take a look for the cap.....she finds it beside the rad by the drain cock....fuck me....it took her 5 minutes!!
So I ended the ordeal with pizza and beer:cool:

I used a wedge with the hanger but it was still f#@&ing with me. I hooked on in about 10 minutes. The other 20 was spent swearing at the car while I rehooked on and tried ....tried .....tried again.:D
this sounds like my life everyday

you put the two cards together between the window and the seal. you then push a wedge shaped object into them. this saves the seal.
you can also use the tow truck driver deluxe air bag tool.
you then straighten out a hanger, double bend the end for strength and put a curve into it. Leave the hanger hook in tact for a handle and unlock car.
I never had issues hooking the lock, just opening so I adapted.
