I am in the process of bolting down my head to my short block. I will give you guys a run threw of what i did and if i missed anything please tell me. Also i can seem to get to the front and read nuts. my cams Tomei Procams have the cutouts to reach the other nuts but end and front are to tight to get my 1/2" Wright tools 12pt socket in their.

-I put engine at TDC #1
-cams at 15deg before and after
-cleaned and inspected decks with 3M oil and grease remover and white cloth.
-installed dowels
-installed head gasket
-lowered head onto engine
-applied assembly lube to stud threads after head was on so i did not contaminate the gasket
-applied lube to washer and nuts and snugged down by hand.

any thing missed?

I can not seem to get the socket onto the front 2 and back 2 nuts. very tight in their. will i have to remove the cams.:( or is their a high clearance socket

I dont know about Tomei cams but with OEM cams there is LOTS of room at the back of the cam.
At the front head stud there isnt a notch at all or is it just not big enough?

What hits the cam, the extension or the socket?

Depending what studs/bolts you are using but getting at OEM's with the 10mm hex socket is easy.

When you say 1/2'' 12 point I'm sure you have ARP hardware, and I went through a similar issue. I could only find 1/2'' 12point sockets in 1/2'' drive and the base of the socket would hit the cams.

Are you getting about half the socket on the front and rear nuts? All I did was take a deep socket like so:

And take it to the bench grinder and grind down the socket after the taper to give me enough room to have the whole nut covered.

I will take some pictures and post. ARP Hardware. I am gonna try to use a short socket and put the socket on the bolt, then the extension in the socket. they are really stout, so maybe i will dig around in my mastercraft and modify like mentioned above.

thanks for quick replys

I have had good luck with craftsman tools just sneaking past the cams. Mine worked anyways.

for ARP stuff you've got two options.

Proper way - remove the cams.

Way I did it - buy a westward 12pt deep socket, grind it shorter till it's got just enough surface left to completely cover the nut, and then grind around the outside lots till it clears the cam.

Shaving the socket is what i did when i put my arp studs in.

I use a craftsman deep socket without an issue for ARP gear.
