View Full Version : GTR as Daily Driver

So. I can't do things properly. I know I should get a newer lower KM daily driver.
But I have this little thing, I have to enjoy and understand the car I'm driving.
That said.
GTR
Fairly stock, nothing serious... Suspension, exhaust, wheels. Properly maintained. Not beat on, just daily driven.
Should I consider it? or no?

Sometimes you win ans sometimes you lose. I have been daily driving mine for 4 years (summers only) but I have had a few small things break and it was nice to have a second car for when it happened.

As long as you don't beat the snot out of it, it's no less reliable then any other car. My second car has also been out of comission before.

daily drive a gts and then have your gtr, i mean honestly whats the point spending say an extra 2 g's on a DD

I say this because the 33 GTR keeps growing on me. and when not inflated to their "ITS NEW IT MUST BE WORTH DOUBLE" pricing, are running under $14k. I figure, providing its in good condition, newer would be better than a 17-21 yr old 32 GTR...

i would have to agree there, the 33 gtr's are sexy mofo's...if you were to get one id say sell your old one for eithere just a beater or a gts or something of that nature, next winter thats what im doing, i have a gts but im not keeping it stock so im buying a beater honda under 1000 bucks and good on gas :D my .02 cents

im building a 4 door gts for drift, some auto-x and track use (not drag).

want a gtr for year round daily use. other option is Scooby (02 WRX, or 94 STI)

knowing your experience and knowledge, you should be fine with a GTR of any generation.

All they need is an RESP fund (Registered EducationNGINE;) Savings Plan) and preventative maintenance and T.L.C.

well i want an awd platform as this will be a year round daily. im not fucking around with rwd another winter.. its fun.. but dag nabit it can be scary.

With what snow are you refering to?

There are guys in Japan that DD their cars year 'round (in the north) and have no more issues than a guy with a BlueBird. Just do yourself a favour and get skinny little winters tucked inboard to keep the rock chips to a minimum. Some temp. mud flaps that you can remove come spring are a good thing too. It really keeps the crap out of the rocker panels and whatnot.

I want an EVO or STi for the Winter......

My GTR however is my summer daily driver.

I'm slowly leaning towards making my HCR a car I keep for a long time and slowly turn into a track car, while picking up a daily subie next year. (GC8)

Funnygas

I generally haven't liked the GC8.. then again, I haven't seen one that I liked until Saturday night when I saw a black STi on gold wheels... Well heard it, then saw it. MMMM
Dammit, can't I just have them all? HAHA

At first I was going to sell my skyline and just build up a GC8 to a 22B spec, but I may just pick up something like this and drive it as it is, trying not to do any major mods (other than cleaning it up and making it more efficient, as it would be a DD and do-it-all car [camping, logging roads, get it dirty car])

this was my old inspiration for my goal: I'll probably revisit this idea for the newer generation subarus in a few years.

1998 Impreza WRX STi (JDM)

DD a GTR is no big deal really, as long as you have a well maintained one.

...and a second car for back-up. lol

DrMango
02-09-2010, 09:41 AM
If your using it as a DD then typically that is your only car available.
WRX are damn good cars and have a proven track record for reliability. I would pick a clean one up in a heart beat. I love all the older WRXs, but Im not a big fan of the EVOs

The thing that really makes me make that "i just smelled something rotten" face is the sound of a Subaru exhaust note, every single one sounds like some asshole pulled a couple of spark plug wires off as a joke. Hardly music.

I would do an EVO, easier to work on and doesn't sound like crap.

Why not? It's just like any other car. Just fast.

Get a newer vehicle with warranty and call it a day. Sure you may have to take it in but you don't pay for most of the parts. If you can barely buy a used car, why would you buy one that's expensive to fix? Get a WRX!

Im kind of in the same boat, trying to decide on a 94 GTR or a 94 GC8 for a year round DD, I know subarus and skylines pretty well but dont know too much about the Altessa system on the GTR. Can it be set to 40/60 full time with a controler for winter use?

Ive owned a 2000 impreza RS before and liked it alot (minus the lack of turbo) it was wicked in the snow/rain

either way its a tough call

Kras

you can by torque split controllers for the GTR, I don't really know which ones are any good though

Of course, anything is possible......but you think EVOs go through Transfer cases often ?....lol...saddle your GTR with full-time 4WD and you will be burnin' through them even worse, changing parts with every oil change......lol
I just don't think the system is capable of running in a full time lockup.

For some reason, I think it would be about as friendly as running your 1977 Chevy 4WD Truck in 4Hi on Dry Pavement all day long.

Jon, that is due to the unequal length exhaust manifolds and the boxer 4 cylinder engine. I personally fell in love with that sound. It's an acquired taste I guess.

You can get equal length twin scroll and make it sound like this:

Thanks Allan, I was thinking that too, seems more like a part time system to help with launching and corner exits.

+1 for boxers they sound sweet

Reminds me too much of a VW exhaust note I suppose. Sound really rinkydinky to my ears.

Now an RB or a V8 at full song though, thats music.

I am gonna have to agree with that and also ad that the new R1 with the cross plane crank is even better. Seriously look that shit up if you haven't heard about it, or heard one on the track:eek:

Hahaha well I suppose, it does have a more bubbly sound almost V-Twin. Though I had never considered it to sound like a boxer everybody's ears are different.

I would tend to agree with most of the guys saying that Flat 4s dont sound too special. I cant get over the idea that it sounds like a z24 cavalier with a couple rust holes in its muffler. You cant watch that wagon video above and think that doesnt sound like a bagged piece of crap. IMHO

I love my GTR as the daily driver. I even have baby seats in it. The wife said I had to be able to get the kids around in it. But like Joker said, you really need a second car for when ANY Skyline breaks down. When I blew the oil seals in the turbo’s, I had to marathon the disassembly and reassembly to be ready for work on Monday (16 hours a day). Only to have to take it all apart again the next weekend to replace a leaking rear turbo oil line that I buggered. What a heinous car to work on! Truly Evil and in-human.

I have an EL header on my WRX and it makes it sound like shit.

I'm putting the stock exhaust back on, or at least the stock turboback.

Boxer engines don't sound bad, just different.

I'd buy a skyline over a WRX any day of the week. There's really no comparison.

A stock WRX is about as much fun to drive as a school bus.

Terrh

note when I refer to WRX's I am referring to GD chassis cars.

GC cars are a whole nother animal and way less shitty, at least in the "fun to drive" department.

when i think back to my gtr dd days i must note.

gtr's do not make a good dd, at least in my experience. at least for me with frequent repairs and even a rebuild.

Compared to my gtst that i put a rock solid 50,000 km on it was no match.

I know a couple guys that DD there GTR's and have for years..

they dont mod then, just do regular maintenance.. and have no issues..

I've driven my car since 2000, just ensure it's properly maintained and try to catch maintanence issues early (during services) you shouldn't have a problem. So far, maintenance wise since I bought the car: Wheel bearings, clutch, tyres, general lube servicing and recently turbos (oil starvation from low oil pressure/low oil + partially blocked oil restrictor)

It's not really the economical choice but I like driving it!
