Yes, you can crack a N1 shortblock.

Maybe flushed engine with cold water when block was hot???

I am not surprised to see this. Regardless of the block used if you let the harmonics do their thing its only inevitable.

who's engine?

there is no such thing as an invincible block anyways.

Could one turn that block into a closed-deck RB?

hmm..

As far as I know, NZ based Japanese tuner customers RB26 engine.

Harmonics is one area, but as far as I know from some of their customers engines, they balance the RB26 engines they build, upgrade crank pully, etc, so hard to say if it was harmonics.

Just FYI RB26 is already a closed deck engine.

I hope my N1 doesn't crack :(

Sorry I dunno why I typed that, I had a brain shnarting session last night.

What I meant is, could one salvage the engine by boring it extra, then sleeving it?

you cant salvage that block. the water gallery has visibly cracked into the head stud. There would be other internal cracking by that point which are not as obvious but much more detrimental.

clean it up and use it as an immovable coffee table stand?

I'm amazed at how many cracked blocks have shown up since skylines have been in Canada. It's almost worse then oil pump failures.

thicker casting and they say material used but that cannot be confirmed

As far as I know N1 shortblock is a modified stock RB26 shortblock (enlarged oil, water galleries, etc).

that is going to be a somewhat unstable table. It works on top gear because a v engine has some width to it.
