View Full Version : Skymeet Location Vote!

OK Guys,
After a fair bit of discussion between Jon and I we came up with 4 possible solutions for places to go for this meet. These are all places you can do a day trip to or a 2 day trip like we are planning. We will organize a group rate on campsites once a location is picked. We decided on a venue a bit further out towards alberta as it does allow us to involve most of the people form BC and AB, which goes along with the skymeetWEST theme. Since we had it in the heart of BC last year I think it's time to make it closer to our AB friends.
1. Banff

2. Jasper

3. Shuswap Lake
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=243+Schoolhouse+St,+Coquitlam,+BC&daddr=Lougheed+Hwy+to:Lougheed+Hwy+to:49.307217,-121.68457+to:Shuswap+Lake&geocode=FYhP7wIdjGut-Cn_g6LadniGVDENnFodxwrWfQ%3BFVI17gIdhDO0-A%3BFTY47gIdvEy4-A%3B%3BFWR2CQMdAIHl-CnDmqe-a-J-UzFAFtmJFTUBKg&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=3&sz=8&via=1,2,3&sll=49.628504,-121.843872&sspn=1.736401,4.938354&ie=UTF8&ll=50.25423,-121.256104&spn=3.428166,9.876709&t=h&z=7
4.Oliver
http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=243+Schoolhouse+St,+Coquitlam,+BC&daddr=Lougheed+Hwy+to:Lougheed+Hwy+to:49.289306,-121.712036+to:oliver+bc&geocode=FYhP7wIdjGut-Cn_g6LadniGVDENnFodxwrWfQ%3BFZie7gIdKLCx-A%3BFWYm7gIdxsq3-A%3B%3BFX527gIdG87f-ClDejIyNuqCVDGwU4T8u2lPIw&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=3&sz=8&via=1,2,3&sll=49.24824,-121.201585&sspn=1.749857,4.938354&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=8

These are 4 options, there will be camping, skanvenger hunts, games etc at the camp site. We will need volunteers to help plan events for the time we are there, since we dont want to get kicked out we ask that you do not drive your cars anymore than absolutely needed. There will be plenty of driving to do as it is!

Banff and Jasper from personal experiences will be super packed that time of year and quite expensive for what you get. Not trying to complain but personally dont like the camping in those 2 places. I dont know anything about oliver but I cant drive that far personally and Shuswap, I just dont have any experience with so I cant say

Shuswap is busy that time of year too, especially if its a nice day.. everyone from around here heads out there on weekends. Not long enough of a drive for me... But I can see Banff / Jasper being too far for some of the Vancouver boys... Decisions, decisions. What would your route from Vancouver to Shuswap be?

I think Shushwap would be key. Great area. Used to go out there as a kid with my family all the time and it was great. You never know, maybe someone could rent a boat... or bring a boat of their own.

Lots of campgrounds up there as well, and Vancouver boys should be able to make it fine.

Calgary Route to Shushwap (http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=243+Schoolhouse+St,+Coquitlam,+BC&daddr=Lougheed+Hwy+to:Lougheed+Hwy+to:49.307217,-121.68457+to:Shuswap+Lake&geocode=FYhP7wIdjGut-Cn_g6LadniGVDENnFodxwrWfQ;FVI17gIdhDO0-A;FTY47gIdvEy4-A;;FWR2CQMdAIHl-CnDmqe-a-J-UzFAFtmJFTUBKg&hl=en&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=3&sz=8&via=1,2,3&sll=49.628504,-121.843872&sspn=1.736401,4.938354&ie=UTF8&ll=50.25423,-121.256104&spn=3.428166,9.876709&t=h&z=7)

It's a bit longer for the Edmonton boys and girls I'll admit...

IM trying to taking his comment lightly but my attitude has really been bent. Im pretty sure that looking at the thread that we already had started about this meet made it pretty clear that there is a lot of AB guys trying to take part. The reason we might not have in the past is because of the guys that just want to have the meets in van. When us AB guys arranged our own meet before we had a considerable amount of people go. And where was that meet? Thats right Banff. So 3 people come? not likely

It was more sarcasm really.. Geeze everyone is so sensitive around here..

Whats more western then Long beach.. that is all.. I love driving i will go anywhere, however botten line people have work/family/money issues, and dont like driving very far, if the meets in Banff, you know there isnt going to be that many Vancouver people going out.. and if the meets in shushwap there isnt going to be many alberta people..

Its all about priority's..

anyways im interested for sure to see how it goes down. and i will go where it ends up being.. I have never been to Banff, so thats cool..

DrMango
02-03-2010, 10:51 AM
this is the western meet not the "most possible western meet" Read the other thread we had started. It addressed your concerns as best we could. Trying to find a location closer to the middle. There isnt many options to be realistic. Camping would atleast make the drive worth while because your not driving the long drive 2 times in one day

We all know sarcasm doesnt translate well on forums. This isnt your first time on a forum. Try harder to show your sarcasm next time so you dont come off like a penis

Kyle

Well let's keep in mind that Banff is only 3 hours away from where you are, and an hour and 20 minutes away from Calgary... I should sure hope a decent number of people showed up from AB.

Banff from Vancouver is 10+ hours from the GVA, not to mention we're more likely to get stuck behind an accident or something, or suffer someone breaking down on our 830km trip versus your 280kms. Hell you wouldn't even have to stop for gas if you left with a full tank. We'd have to leave with a full tank, stop half way, and fill up when we got into Banff.

Even if you disregard that, considering I would personally love to see Banff, and am all for a good drive, let's keep in mind that it's apparently very expensive in Banff and Jasper those months.

You're upset because Schuswap is too far, because you'd have to drive 9 hours to get there. We'd have to drive 5-6. It's more in the middle than 10+ and 3 from your place (or 1.5 from Calgary).

Shuswap is farther for Edmonton, and people like DrMango who are North of Calgary a ways, but from Calgary and Vancouver stand-points, it is almost equal (7 hours). Imagine that there might be people coming from Squamish, Whistler, or the Island, which would likely equate those who left from Edmonton and elsewhere in AB. It's pretty much right in the middle, and a great all round area for what we're looking for...

Oh and I'm assuming that you will be back to look at this post (DrMango) because otherwise no one is really going to take your feelings into consideration assuming that if you'll ditch this thread, you likely won't come to the meet... Just as Dah_hunter predicted.

I say this all with a kind heart, and a voice of reason. Merely trying to find the middle point between all our members who are attending.

And I am coming down for GG this year too. March 28!!!! Maybe I can get some of the panzies in Kamloops to come along this time.

I bought my car to drive it, not to look at it. Im 16,000km into this one since July. I would drive anywhere this meet is. But in all fairness Shuswap is Central for all.

In all fairness to the BC guys, I can see why some would be frustrated.

Why cater to the Alberta guys if only 2 are going to show up ?

Perhaps the Alberta guys need to have a couple 'Practice' Meets, just to see who we all have that is 'into' the Meet scene and will come out. There have been ALOT of new additions this last year or so, in terms of Alberta owners, so like I said, maybe we start with City meets, then work on a Provincial......then worry about a 'Western' meet. ??

I think this will also build some better relationships locally, so that we all don't show up to a Western Meet as strangers. People will feel MORE comfortable and more inclined to come out with a group of their 'local' guys that they all know (safety in numbers....lol). We need to know our locals first, I think anyways.

Just an idea.....as I would vote Shushwap anyways.

I agree there Allan. There is quite a few AB guys on GTRPWR now. Mostly being from calgary but a few in eddy. Could we do a central meet in Red Deer or even a meet in calgary to get things started off this season. Im down either way

unfortunately this is a weekend thing.. not a week long thing, though that'd be most awesome. we're trying to find a central location for everybody... so let's all just try to step back and think.. where would be most fair for everybody? probably somewhere that is the 'center of mass' for everybody yah? somewhere that's central according to populations and such. if a bunch of sask people were gonna show up, then yes the meet WOULD be in Alberta. however from the people who are posting, it appears they're mostly from the 604 and 250 region. so if anything, it should be closer to our side.. however we're trying to meet inbetween.. mostly because we want to have a good long cruise and because we do want to meet our Alberta counterparts. come on people! it's all bout the cars, and as funnygas said: we bought these cars to drive em.. so come out and have some fun. there'll be lots of great stuff up for grabs too.. i guarantee it ;)
