View Full Version : Modifying BNR32 Front Seats

I am getting ready to start re-covering my OEM seats in my GTR with the Superior Kit that I bought and have a couple questions before I begin.
http://superior-cia.com//pic-labo/llimg/32gtrcbfull.JPG
First off...
Has anyone modified their seats at all, to sit up a little more ? I feel like I am almost laying in the back seat when I sit in an OEM BNR32 seat. I wish it had 1 or 2 more 'notches' of adjustment to make it sit more upright, as I like to sit, not lay down when I drive. Do you think this could be easilly accomplished as a 'slight' modification ?
Second....
The driver's seat I bought for $100 (knowing that I just needed something to re-cover) has a slight tear in the side. Should I take the time to patch it up, sew it ? or is a good old Duct Tape-job going to be sufficient under the thick Superior moulded Covers ?
Last....
I am considering actually cutting into the OEM Driver's seat a bit and re-padding, then patch-sewing where I stuffed. Take a little out here......add a little padding there...know what I mean ? Does this sound do-able ? (providing I don't add too much stuffing, so that the covers still fit).....
I, in no way, chose to use OEM seats because they were comfortable (although they are not bad for a smaller person, as my wife loves hers), I am using them because I want a DECENT looking interior, hence the wasted money on a full front/rear Superior re-cover kit.
I am hoping that I can do a little magic to my driver's seat anyways, to better suit me.

That's the point of the roller knob on the side, fine tune the seat angle. Don't tell me you over looked that fundamental seat operation.

I have actually never used an OEM Driver's seat, nor have I been a passenger ever. My car came with unmatched seats and I have been using the 'Racing Seat' that came with it in the Driver's position. I only have the passenger's seat angle to compare to. The driver's seat I have has never been inside my car.
My concern was based on looking over, like I said, at the passenger's seat.

Tried to do this, not very easy by my standards. Couldnt really find anywhere to start on modding it... Also didn't like the idea that I would be modding my seat and possibly compromising it in the event of an accident.

Time/Quality best bet would be to sew it, no need for a patch IMO. The duct tape will hold it together for a max of about 30 mins. After it lets go you have a soft spot in your leather cover that could get damaged. A reasonable sew should take no more than 15 mins.

Don't see why not? But I doubt that you would ever get it comfy again... Like that small lump in your pillow or that extra hoodie under a jacket, you can never get it quite right. Also, I feel like the padding would shift all over the place and just leave you with a mondo headache.
Like Mcfly said there is an adjuster on the side of the seat.
Let us know how they work out, I was thinking about a set a while ago but thought about doing some thing custom instead.
they do look pretty wicked however, you will have to post some pics up when you get them in

I figured for the price of custom vs covers, these covers would be a decent solution ($800CAD for front & rear combined ?)
Thankfully, these are not really 'seat covers' in the literal sense per say, but more like over-upholstery (if my fake made-up term makes sense.....lol).
I can't wait to get started and get the finished seats into the car, because seats make such a HUGE difference look-wise to the car....even them alone. The difference between shit interior and decent is pretty much seats.....and I am happy that even though my back seats will not be used, atleast everything will match.
Cheers,
Allan

Reshaping Factory Seats (Autospeed) (http://autospeed.com.au/cms/A_110948/article.html)
That might come in handy. I always thought it would be nice to add a bit more lumbar support and beef up the bolsters. Maybe even replace some of the stock foam with newer, much more firm foam.

Nice. I needed something like that.
True they are more of skin than a cover, I just dont like rippels in the fabric (loose fit) but those look like the fit is very tight
stoked to see some pics when you get them in
