I have been doing some research and this is not looking pleasant at all. My GTR is now in BC and I really shouldn't be insuring my car with Alberta plates anymore.
Anyways, my GTR is missing these right now according to the list.

Power steering - old cars dont have it, can i say mine never came with it?
Windshield Defrost + heater - Can i run an electric and force some air up to pass? Defroster as heater?

It just says headlight aim, i hope i fond a shop that doesnt check that. same with side markers and junk like that. This is the only form we have at the dealership, so we obviously don't have much paperwork in regards to this.
Ideas on helping me pass?

Doesn't anyone at the ship have an OOP license? Buy them a case of beer? lol

I have a feeling this won't be fun for you at all.

I'm sure power steering won't be an issue. DRL's are almost a for sure. I'm not familiar with BC's OOP but I have AB's OOP sheet similar to that you have posted.

I can't wait for some apprentice tech to try and get your car into the shop...stall...start...stall...start...stall. "Sir your clutch is gone".

In seriousness though, if it is at all possible to find out what shops around are more lenient on things...brakes/seatbelts/lights workign etc are typical things that cars NEED to be safe on the road, find a shop that would let things like a modified exhaust go.

you need side markers. no way around that. 240sx ones work real nice. wired to the tail lights. headlights. call john (dragonhumper). he has 85 camaro lights with custom brackets. they pass inspection. worked for him, worked for me. other than that its a basic inspection. no tint on front windows, mounts for front plate, compliant exhaust (not overly loud, has to have a cat and a baffled muffler (resonator counts). no part of the car can be lower than the lowest point of the wheels (tires not included). most of this stuff wont be an issue. just headlights and markers. if you dont have the stock shift knob you need a shift pattern indicator... i printed a sticker at work and stuck it to my dash... haha.

i need a empty cat, can steal my gtst exhaust.
I need a front plate mount for my gtr bumper

I was told i can get away with just stick on front amber reflectors and most places will pass red stick on rear reflectors as side markers. Maybe do the glue screws into the reflector rather then drill holes. Really want to avoid holes in the rear quarters.

Headlight aim is no big deal at all. Do it yourself. Powersteering is not mandatory either. If they get you for that, it's bullshit. Make up some excuses exactly like the old old car story. As for the heater,I dunno hehe too lazy to think of somethifng right now. Your smart your idea should work

Edit: I might have a cat for you... I'll check tomorrow

do you need a cat? You could come pull mine if you have to... 3 inch 2 bolt flanges. Sard cat

I wont be doing it right this second. I need a few things though.

Defroster
two tires
cat
reflectors front/rear(try and get away with no lights)
DRL's

likely forgetting some things

You will need:
DTRL
DOT headlights properly aimed
Side markers that light up (you can use your front corner lamps as a side marker/DTRL)
DOT marked tires
Cat
Nuteral safety switch

the rest is just a safety inspection... never seen them check the heater but Im sure its on some long list that they never check, they are supposed to road test the car so they might notice the lack of P/S

Zacho

I think the road test will be great. Tech won't be able to drive the quad plate OS, and end up doing a 10 foot test drive.

neutral safety switch - perhaps steal one off a 240?

Manual transmission cars do not require a neutral safety switch according to the cvse in BC. The road test will be a gong show.

You will need:
DTRL
DOT headlights properly aimed
Side markers that light up (you can use your front corner lamps as a side marker/DTRL)
DOT marked tires

so by front corners as side markers you mean the bulge in the signal as a sidemarker? The list they check says interior heater unfortunately.

Funnygas

the bulge on the corner marker is ok for front reflectors, mine had always passed.
you do not require a neutral safety switch if the car never came with one, skyline's did not.
you will not get away with stock skyline headlights at an inspection facility in kamloops.
if your hurtin you can borrow my accord lights for a day..

This list isnt correct..
Rear Side markers that light up are required.
Front reflectors are require
Tires that are Load Rated (They dont need DOT on them)
Neutral Safety switch isnt required

Powersteering i dont think are required in the Manual.. as there is lots of cars that dont have that..

That Pic you posted isnt the correct Inspection form.. I have never seen that form before. I will take a scan of the forms and post it up.. I get 2 - 4 inspections done a month..

This is the exact one our techs use at work apparently, top one was all i could find. I am curious as to what your forms look like. I suppose they will just put N/A for power steering. Can they do that for defrost too :p How about interior heat - summer car doesn't need heat :s

carry on

Your right I forgot the front markers did not have to illuminate, although it really does not make sense if the rears have to light up. The problem is every inspector interprets the requirements differently, some are anal about DOT tires / 3rd brake lights / neutral safety switch and all that crap and then some will pass the car with the stock headlights in still. When things don’t add up and Victoria comes a knocking at the inspection facility prepare for a good time.... just look at that place called mercedes (sp?) in van that got busted... every one has to be re-inspected. The worst yet, if you car is not compliant and you crash ICBC can void you insurance meaning you will be left with the full tab to pay for you and any one involved if its your fault.

heres a link to the old form, most use the new e-form

Defrost / heat is for security reasons. When it rains or something, and your window is all fogged up, you'll soon be cursing that you dont have heat/defrost. Although most our cars dont see rain, the province doesn't care.

What's rain? I live in Kamloops.

I have never heard of anyone that had insurance voided because of non compliance..

I know a lot of people that have been in accidents.. Inhumane is a perfect example.. his car had nothing compliant on it.. ICBC paid him out a ton..

anyways.. I have talked to Brian Kangas about these things in the past.. each to his own.. I know what the Manual says.. and what pass's.. I don't bother with shops that aren't educated anymore.. anyways i wont argue about this.. its all good..

I went to T&H Auto on the north shore, got inspected and on the road for $145, who the hell charges $500!?!?! That's highway robbery.

The only thing you need is defrost. Heat is only a by-product. I've seen guys with full blown drag cars with no interior at all pass with one of those cheezeball little 12 volt heaters blowing on the windshield.

With Mark at T&H you will need all the BC shit, headlights, ill. markers/reflectors(he is ok with the DOT stickers), 3rd brk, DTR's, CAT, tires (LR) and ofcourse the defroster.

Don't worry about the power steering, if they ask just say that it never came with it. They prob. won't ask.

I'm back in Kamloops in a week for good (I'm sick of all the fucking rain down here) so you can use my headlights if you like.

My tires are not here yet so I wont be doing it right away here. I read the third brake light was not required on cars built before 1994.

You missed what I meant by the 500 dollar inspection :p

Rapier46

500 is stupid to pay. Give the tech fifty bucks and it should be done right there.

dah_hunter
02-10-2010, 12:37 PM
This is why shops in BC dont like to take $500

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/vehicle-inspections-shut-down/article1430558/

and for third brake light requirement is 89 on cars, 94 on trucks..

mcfly
02-10-2010, 12:42 PM
sure, that's always the risk for the inspection shop. That is an extreme case.

Get a temp permit drive it down here get it inspected and you will be done..

I thought cars was 1986 for the third light and 1990 for the DTRL.

And, DUH, $500 inspection.........(smacks head).

Oh yea, hey Ben my CARRY is coming in around the 8th of March with maybe the Nissan March in tow, can you give me a hand in the landing of those little buggars.

Well if there are shops there that will pass it as is then why is this an issue..

if not.. then the drive down here is worth it..

Or im crazy.

Did you still need a front plate bracket? We don't use front plates in NS. I took mine off and it's just taking up space in my cabinet.
It's freeninetynine you just pay for the shipping.
PM if interested.
