FYI, this is just me thinking out loud while I plan what to do when my stockers decide to disintegrate.

Has anyone thought about putting a Holset HE351VE with VGT on an RB26? I mean, with the ability to go from a fairly small exhaust housing to a rather large one relatively easily if you pull the stepper motor out and use a wastegate actuator it should be able to spool up nicely and then open up for high boost applications.

Thoughts?

This sounds very interesting to me too. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the topic. I hope someone will post their thoughts.

I just started reading about this turbo after seeing this post and must say it looks really cool. The only thing I dont really understand is how to control it, although I have only been reading about it for the last 20 minutes.

I'm not going to lie. I understand turbochargers better then most people but looking at that vgt baffles me. I actually think it is the first time I have ever looked at one taken apart for that matter. Maybe my pictures are labeled wrong as its function looked backwards.

There is some good info on this turbo here:

I am still confused on how exactly it works but maybe that thread will help someone else.

Haha, that thread is on another one of the forums I'm on and where I got the inspiration for this thought.

If he gets 25 PSI by 4400 RPM in a 2.4l, I should be able to get it by 4100-4200, I'm guessing. It could be even faster with a nice set of cams.

Mcfly, I understand what you're saying. When the VGT is closed, it's referencing the fact that the exhaust housing has been shrunk. It didn't make sense to me eitheruntil I remembered that in his pictures there is no exhaust housing on his turbo.

Mold, the way that he has it is pretty basic but it works. He just uses a wastegate actuator to move the vanes instead of moving an internal wastegate. There are people that are starting to crack the code for the electronic actuator that comes on the turbo from the factory, but I'm thinking why even bother if the WG actuator works.

I just thought it was a cool turbo that could have some serious power applications and I have never seen a Skyline with something like this. If this does happen, it will be a long process (mortgage, woman, bills, etc...) But it should be fun ;)

Those are the exact pictures I saw, I need a cutaway of the turbine area as this is making no sense in my head.

Either way these are good for about 600 whp?

600 is a pretty safe bet. There are guys pushing 48-50 PSI with these.

Sorry guys....bring the rest of us up to speed ?

What is VGT ?

Variable Geometry Turbo.

The hot side has vanes that move in and out of the exhaust housing to change the actual dimensions of the exhaust housing. Small exhaust housing to spool up faster, then it opens up once a certain boost level is attained to spin to the moon.

Interesting.

Look on Holset website, as it explains how the VGT works -

I think it's a great idea, I know Porsche has been using similar technology for a few years now. I'm having a difficult time finding a price though.
