We had recently gotten onto the topic of Ignition Systems etc while talking about Plugs and Coilpacks:
Spark Plugs & Coilpacks info - GTRPWR Forums

....so I figured we might as well get an actual Ignition Thread going.
What's available, who's using it......and what would you use ?

Here's a little list I have come up with. Let's add info similar to the ECU Pro/Cons thread if we can.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Common RB Complete/Partial/Retro-Fit Ignition:
--------------------------------------------------------------
GM LS2/LS7 Coil Retro Fit.
- Known as some of the best firing coils available.
- Ignitor built into each coil.
- Coil Near Plug, Not Coil On Plug, Short Wire, Remote Setup.
- Car version small - Truck version built in heat sink.
- Require EMS with Dwell Adjustment for best performance.

AEM Coil On Plug CDI Ignition System.
- Pencil Coils & Twin-Fire CDI Ignition Module.

Misc. Wasted Spark Conversions.
- Ignition Module + Individual Wires per plug.

Z32 Ignition Ignitor Conversion.
- Cheaper Replacement (50% of RB Module).
- Better availability in North America.
- Simple Wire switching conversion.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Ignition Boosters:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Kenne Bell Boost-A-Spark
- Voltage conditioner/stabilizer.
- Boost activated, user controllable.
- Single split-wire connection/installation.

HKS Twin Power DLI.
- Voltage stabilizer/booster.

Okada Plasma Booster.
- Voltage stabilizer/booster.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Coil Pack Choices:
--------------------------------------------------------------
- OEM Nissan Coils.
- Splitfire Coils.
- Yellow, Red, Blue 'Jackets' etc. - White Label Brands.
- Australian, Chinese, Japanese etc (Above).
- Okada Plasma Direct Coil Upgrade.

--------------------------------------------------------------

After talking to Mcfly a coupe times in the past about it, the GM LS2/LS7 Coil Conversion is getting better and better looking every day, the next time I have to replace my Coils. I can't really see a weak point to add to it, but others may be able to shed more light on the subject.

Please feel free to add anything that I have missed and I will update the original list above once we are done.

Thanks,
Allan

So if a guy has problems with his RB ignitor you can use a Z32 ignitor with limited rewire needed? I think thats looking like a good option for me because I'm going to be replacing the coils and ignitor this spring. Could save a lot there

I've used nissan Z32 coils before too. they work and fit about as well as any of the other ones that weren't designed to fit in there.

They don't fit the stock plugs - but if yours are busted that's a non issue - and they have the same 3 wire setup as stock, even marked the same.

Personally I bought a set of new OEM coils and have been running them for the last 12 months. they seem to be working fine. My old coils were starting to fail and I was trying to diagnose why my car would randomly not advance the ignition timing as much as usual.

Interesting.

Depends on application. Some ignition setups that are better than stock are only good for dragstrip, etc and not for idling around alot in traffic. Motec CDI ignition setup, as used up to 1700hp at engine on fastest GTR in the world would be one example. OEM ignition system is better in street application and up to 1000hp in dragracing applications. But HKS have proven that with their HKS Twin Power Ignition Amplifier, they can go over 1000hp at engine with OEM coilpacks in their 7sec R33 GTR dragcar.

I would post a link, but have been told not to post links in these threads. http://www.gtrpwr.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

I was talking about using a Z32 ignitor pack on an RB20 without much work? Not so much the coils themselves..

How would you wire a wasted spark setup or gm individual coils.

I'm using a Electromotive Tec3r stand alone. As with others, it's only as good as the tuner. I'm still learning, even after using the products for many years.

I hope to take it to a pro some day, and wring ever bit of power the set up has to offer. Even on my tune, its a handful. I can imagine what it would do with a proper tune...

Here's a link to a GM Coil conversion. Start there.

Interesting, thanks for the link. :)

Looks to be better than the Grand National wasted spark coilpack setup, as it's still individual coil.
