View Full Version : Overfilling your RB?

Hi guys,
Since a while I was having the famous oil pressure fluctuation problem on my GT-R, it happened only on the first three gears so I rolled the car hard on fourth and fifth gears :). After reading this http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/110410-oil-pressure-drops-boost.html I found for the first time some people who had the same trouble as me. I always thought that this happened with GT-R running over like 700whp, my 460whp would never cause me this.

Yesterday I tried the famous overfill technique...it worked! My problem is no totally disappeared but its much better than it was before. I was already running 1/4 of an inch over the high mark on the dipstick but now its just under the top wave on the dipstick.

Now I think that I' am about a liter overfill, do you think that I could overfill it more again? Do you know if overfilling can cause problems (any kind)?

Let’s discuss!

try do not go more then a 1.5 liter overfill or you may get the crank sloshing some oil around at low rpms and a lot of smoke.

was this pressure reading from the stock gauge? The R32 oil pressure senders are very flaky at best. Overfilling is more to avoid oil starvation in cornering or hard accel or decel. Basically a bandaid fix instead of sump baffling or a dry sump setup. Sometimes my stock gauge will be almost at 0 but I know for sure that isnt the case.

This reading was first from my Omori gage and continued with my new Defi one.

Good practice on a RB regardless of what you have added to the sump :p

I am currently rebuilding an engine and decided to go with the Tomei oil pump. After reading a lot on the GTR UK site, many people overfill their sumps as a "fix" for the much higher oil pressure from the Tomei pump. But ideally you should have a sump extention.

The sump extension is my plan for nest summer!

The sump extension is quite honestly a terrible idea for Canada roads. it is the lowest part of the car once it's welded on. If we are talking about the greddy one.

Yes it is not the best idea but what else can you do? Malibusst is selling a pan with the extension already on on GTRC and it looks like it will be VERY low once installed.

Not more than 1.5L as it may splash and get whipped up by the crankshaft and be aerated. You don't want foamy oil. (despite how much anti-foaming agent is in most oils nowadays)

My RIPS Pan.....

Stays up above the x-member and safely out of harm's way for a Street driven car without worries of tearing it off the bottom of the car like a Greddy Extension. I also decided to stay with a smooth bottom, as RIPS sometimes build these pans with cooling fins on the bottom of the pan. I wanted MAX ground clearance......and MAX capacity.

It definately works for me. You would also be pleasantly surprised to see the inside/baffle design. Unfortunately the buyers of this unit are asked by RIPS, that they DO NOT post pics of the inside design on the internet, as it is a proprietery design by RIPS and Rob would like to keep it that way. I can respect that, as RIPS are true innovators in our world and have done some great things, such as prove the REAL strength of an RB without buying into all of the usual 'JDM Scare Tactics' that force us to buy crap that we don't need. They are 1 shop/designer/manufacturer that I truly support - and for good reason.

I can however tell you that there are NO moving parts inside the pan ;)

It's not a big secret.

My Invoice On November 4, 2008 reads $1,850.00 NZD ($1,154.57 USD at the time)

This included:
- An OEM Oil Pan.
- Custom Oil Pickup/Tube.
- All Modifications to make it into a 'RIPS Drag Sump'.
- My 'Special Requests' (no bottom fins, 10AN in on Intake side, style etc).
- Shipping to my door.

I recall paying about $70 CAD when it arrived (Duty/Brokerage/Taxes etc.) which put the grand total to about $1200 USD Landed, back then.

Today's pricing may be different due to exchange, cost of materials etc, but that should give you a rough idea.

LOL......Sorry.
You will have to take my word for it......as well as all of the EXTERNAL pics that are posted all over the Interweb, of everyone elses, along with my RIPS Drag Sump. Trust me...... IT IS REAL.

sounds like 1200 dollars I could have put towards a welder and done the same thing frankly.

Well then, take a few pre-orders with deposits, get a couple spare OEM Sumps, along with the equipment you would need.... and get started. It would be a pretty easy sell considering your location (well, CANADA anyways....lol).

It would be great to have someone a little closer than New Zealand that could do this type of modification. I chose RIPS at the time, because there simply wasn't......and I still haven't installed it...lol
