View Full Version : Crazy Knock Readings
Ok so....I had a really weird problem today.
I was driving home from work and everything was good. Then I drove into a rain storm (first rain I've drivin in this summer) and after about 5 minutes my car started acting up.
The knock readings on the PFC were going nuts and my exhaust warning on the dash was flashing. I quickly pulled over and it was still doing it at idle. I looked at my wideband and the A/F ratio's were normal. I opened the hood and everything sounded like it was running normal. I wasn't far from home so I started driving home and noticed that when the rev's got up around 3k the knock would lower down alot and if I got on the gas it would pretty much go away. Then I got about half way home and my car started to misfire and sound like a subaru so I pulled over again. I shut the car off and noticed the battery cables were loose so I tightened them up and the car started to run, but I could still hear a slight miss when I was sitting at a red light.
I was all freaked out that I may have damaged something so I did a compression test right when I got home.
Compresison came out great:
165-160-165-170-165-170
So I'd think its some sort of electrical issue that was caused by the moisture. Where should I start?

I remember hearing a knock-like sound when you started up to go to booster juice at that meet...it sounded really harsh, maybe this is connected? or is that how it runs lately
you are probably refering to my twin plate clutch...
the car was runing awesome at the meet. Since I had the car tuned, I havnt seen any knock over 20....untill this damn rain storm lol.

check your plugs for discoloration
I looked at all the plugs when I did the comp test. They all looked normal.

well then, if your air fuel is good and your plugs are good maybe your knock sensor is on its way out

how black were the ceramics of the plugs? the tips can be fine but if the ceramic builds up enough carbon they will foul that way too as you get the spark plug grounding itself.
Let it dry out and see how it goes as thats the easiest explanation.
I can't really remember lol I just took a quick look at them as I took them out and they looked fine, but I was more focused on doing the compression test.
I'll try starting it up again in the morning and report back.
It just seems like the moisture and mist from driving on the highway must have screwed with one of the wires. Finding which one will probably be a huge PITA.
Ok I started the car this morning now that it has had time to dry up.
Everything is running perfectly normal again....lol

Good to hear, unfortunately though it does not solve the problem if you want to drive in the rain
Haha I know. I was talking with Bignate and I guess I'm going to have to go over things with a spray bottle and try to locate what wire or w/e is causing this.
Since I had the coil cover on and fastened down I doubt moisture got down in there so I think I'll start from the igniter and go from there.
As far as I know it's normal for high knock count to happen with PowerFC when coilpacks play up, as get more engine noise.
Check CAS, as it's closest to where water can enter engine bay. Sometimes the seals on CAS are damaged and could let water in that affects the electronic part of CAS.

haha old thread indeed. Turns out it was water leaking through my shitty window trim onto the pfc and making things go crazy. I fixed the leak and dried things out and it went back to normal. Thanks for your input though :)
I see. Not the first time I've heard of that happening on a R32GTR with front window. Supposedly you are meant to remove clip on seals around windows and reseal around windows. I guess not many people do this window service part with their R32GTR or R32GTS and window leaks.

I just find that having no "newer style" door with window frame has led to water getting in through the seals when i pressure wash the car.
water always gets in around my window seals when I wash it, annoying...
