View Full Version : Dry Pod Air Filters

Well, I am trying desperately to decide on a pair of POD Filters to use on my Greddy Suction kit, as I am pretty anti-foam filter...lol
I am however going to stay the DRY route. My Choices (that I know of) are:
1) Apexi (bolt-on, good, but expensive. ~$80+/each)
2) Fujita F5 (slide-on, decent reviews. ~$40+ each)
3) AEM DryFlo (silde-on, decent reviews. ~$50+ each)
The 3 above all use a dry 'material' filtering system and are washable/re-useable.
I am NOT interested in Paper or Foam (throw aways). So, NO Greddy, HKS mushrooms etc.
Also, NO WET Filters......as most are outperformed by Dry anyways.....as that is where it's at for filters these days.
Anyone else have any ideas for DRY Cone Filters ?
Thanks,
Allan

Remember this?
http://www.australianauto.com.au/HTML/Images/Air%20Filter%20Shoot%20Out.pdf
The 3A Racing was rated for best flow (1st) and filtration (2nd).
This is their website: http://www.3aracing.com.au/
When comes the time to change mine, this will probably the route I'll be trying out.

Me neither, but tests seem legit, and at 28.95$ (according to the document) vs other brands in the 100$ range, I would give it a go.
Interesting subject.
I use Apexi podfilter on my car and cost me around $46 CAD for replacement podfilter with gaskets. But I think that's direct from Apexi Japan via a Apexi agent and had to pay shipping cost's, so total cost was more. Apexi podfilters are use, dispose like most dry podfilters. As far as I know, only K&N can be reoiled and reused.
3a racing look good, perform good, but using a intake hoseclamp that can come undone with vibration vs bolt style on Apexi podfilter that doesn't. If they had bolt style, would look at buying 3a racing.
As far as I know bigger filter element = higher flowing (same with oilfilters). I assume that's why some podfilters flow better than others.

Thats a really good link and I learned a bit from it. I might end up with a new intake when I need to replace the Apexi one I have now..

One of my past gtr's had hks mushrooms and it would suck them in if I ran more then 20 pound of boost. So finally I just took them off and ran the steel mesh.

The only ones I can find that will suit me are AEM's, as they are black.......that's good enough for me. Filtering is far more important than flow, since the air has 'help' coming in on our cars anyways.

Apexi air filters are the best. there was a test, they used a vacuum and sucked up dirt. apexi let in the least dust, and most air. mushrooms are awful!
Edit:
Here you go

Im going to use apexi air filters on mine, let me know where you get them. we can buy them together maybe

That's an old test and has been discussed many times. I think it's safe to say that the data is OUTdated now.
The 3a Racing test (posted above) is more current and shows current brands, that have caught up to Apexi and surpassed in some cases.

I always thought they were crap to begin with, before I saw any tests.
You still have rb20 right? The rb20 apexi filter for my gts was great.

Where did you get it here?
I found a local shop up the street from me is a 3A racing dealer and I picked up a filter from them. To be honest it looks like a ractive filter you'd get from canuck tire hahaha.

The K&N did pretty good, #1 in filtration, they other 3A racing one looks like ass ....but hey the numbers say other wise. Ill propably go with a K&N on my next motor and ditch the old HKS mushroom filter

The sad fact of the matter is, anyone using either an HKS or Trust/Greddy Foam mushroom (like me) would be better off running a $20 Ebay Dry/Washable Cone Filter.......and would be far more protected.
....and anyone who says different is retarded.

I recall one of the Vendors over at GTRC posting in defense of HKS Foam filters one time, saying "they were the best filters they use and get great results and only use them" - what a bunch of crap.

I remember laughing when I read that too, and I never needed a test other than a visual one to know they suck

I have decided to go Cone filters with custom cover from a local sheetmetal place, or maybe order the one from Aus that I pictured earlier in this thread.
Anyways.....
I have been all over Ebay looking at filters and have narrowed it down to 2:
AEM DryFlow and Fujita F5 SuperFlow. Both 3.0" Inlets, approx 5" long body Cone Filters. The Fujita uses an open tip like the Apexi, whereas the AEM is a sealed tip.
Both are dry-style filters and are maintainable, as well as priced realatively close.
(Under $50 USD Each x2, plus shipping....$130 USD/Pair shipped max.)
I just can't bring myself to spending the big bucks on an Apexi, as another prerequisite that I have is that the filter needs to be a slide-on. The Apexis are not.
Let's see some comments. AEM vs. Fujita.
Thanks,
Allan
