I got my head back from the shop, with new springs, seals, guides, collets and retainers installed, and I was just about to start shimming for the new cams and lifters when I noticed that the recession in the retainer where the shim sits is a bit larger than the actual shim, which allows for lateral movement. The shim is around .470", and the shim seat in the retainer is around .515" (I don't remember the actual numbers, but they're close enough for this discussion), and I didn't think that the shims were able to move around in the OEM retainer.
So is there any problem with using the OEM shim?
I guess if nothing else, I can still use them for measuring purposes to order the appropriate ones.
