View Full Version : My 90' GTR

One day, around two and a half years ago now I thought it would be cool to build North Americas fastest GTR. I am now knee deep in a half built car and no more money to finish;)
It will be finished and I give everyone my word there. Unfortunately until I get into a house with a garage the money won't be making it to the car.

As it stands right now the car had a built bottom end, the one I will be using for the big numbers in fact. Some really nice internals in there and surprisingly they ended up being the cheap part of everything. On the top end of the engine I have a stock head and stock turbo's. I did this so I could break it in hard without having to mess around tuning it at the same time.

The car has run for two seasons now. Last fall I got it on the road but only got 1300 km on it before the temps started hitting the minus' overnight. It was dormant for the winter while I collected more parts. I have the odometer up to 4xxx km now and the engine is sufficiently sound for the next half of the build.

one day I plan to run into the 8's with the car. Yes, big goals.
In the current state the car needs 15k to be finished up as most of the parts are already in storage.

Currently in order to finish the car the main components I need to buy/make are;
th400 transmission - Easy to get and build for my needs at around 3k
I need to build a transfer case adapter - already prototyped in my head and on paper
custom length and spline th400 output shaft - cannot be done until I get the adapter milled
custom driveshaft - once again easy task once everything in front if together
fuel system - costly, aiming at a weldon 2345 with moran 350lb injectors
dry sump mount and drive - have a FWRC pump already, will make the scavenge pan myself, oil tank, lines, fittings, ati pump drive.

There is of course some other misc things such as exhaust piping once the turbo is mounted and compression piping but those are final touches. Almost forgot, a paint job, years of neglect takes its toll on paint.

I'll try and make a few more posts with some of what I consider highlights of the cars build.

it will be "street legal":p
Guess it depends who's street, it will still have all the lights and what not.

Hopefully I win the lottery this year and can build the dream garage.
I'll cook up a post with some highlights later this week. Tight on time.

i believe its the colour from a takata harness, and they are probably the only enkei nto3+m wheels in the world that are takata green, so i guess they are very rare lol

You can order wheels from Volk in Takata Green. They are special order but they are around.
More common on Honda forums then nissan.

I have no updates really. Or highlights for that matter because I have lost interest with the car being 800 km's away. Out of sight out of mind. I'll get around to it though sometime soon.

I winterized the gtr yesterday for storage. engine still purs.

Now on a positive note i just sent off another email regarding my transfer case adapter. th400 - attesa.

That's the major bottle neck in this situation but i think i have a very positive lead on machining them now. I will keep you guys posted. In the mean time until I get on my feet in BC here and buy a house the projects one somewhat of a "hold"

I see. Any good CNC shop should be able to make it with CAD program if you give them the bolt pattern templates (or parts + car to take measurements), length of adaptor, shape of internals, etc.

But not the only big hp GTR owner asking that question -

http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/drag-racing-tech/942554-th400d-nissan-skyline-gt-r33.html

A person is mentioned by Prostock John in above link who might be able to help you.

I like what you have done with the TH400 set up, I gather this is for a drag car, if so why bother keeping the 4WD?, Im sure you have your reasons ...just curious

after the launch wouldnt it just slow you down?

cant wait to see this beast all finished

mcfly
12-05-2009, 05:11 PM
Believe it or not the vehicle will still see the street when I am all done with it, maybe not a lot but enough to warrant 4wd or at least help. What good is a GTR without Attesa though? The car is being built for drag and i do agree the fastest cars are rwd. but a true gtr has to be 4wd so that is why I am keeping it.

Anyways, I was back in Edmonton for the weekend so we packed the gtr and the bike up for it's road trip to Kamloops sometime next month.

TougeJunkie

Looks like a BDE-Performance TH400 adaptor. I have Brett's setup on my S14 w/ VH45DE. Launching off of a transbrake is incomparable to anything else. I was pulling 1.51s short times with a stock VH45DE and 26x11.5" MT ET Streets.

I'm assuming you'll be doing a transbrake, etc. in your car. What will you be doing for a transfer case?

mcfly
12-07-2009, 07:03 AM
I am currently trying to track down a machine shop that will build me a transfer case adapter. This is a much bigger problem then it appears as everyone i talk to tells me no.

yeah transbrake with a stall hopefully up near 7 if we had the the convertor built correctly.

Have you given any thought to running a GM transfer case? What is the overall length of the TH400 compared to the stock 5-speed, will the driveshaft length be effected if you do manage to get a transfer case adapter built?

TougeJunkie
12-07-2009, 04:53 PM
I was thinking that too, custom drive shafts and TC mounts, maybe a bit of sheet metal work on the floor pan to make room, who knows there may be enough room already

custom drive shafts are not an issue tons of shops make those. Most domestic transfer cases flip the wrong way, the rest of them either don't hold enough power or are a constant split that would destroy the front drivetrain in the gtr.

Novak wont do anything for me, i have asked many times.

There'd be something overly disgusting about an automatic GTR....1000whp would take care of that nicely, but for the money you're going to spend on custom bell housing/attesa adapter/drive shafts/etc wouldn't you just be better off buying a Liberty sequential or something? :p I am allergic to the volume of mosquitoes in Manitoba.

I have Ariel of Custom Plenum Creations making me an intake plenum right now. It is going to have a 92mm throttle body flange. I have decided to go with either a Nick Williams or FAST 92mm lsx throttle body. Having an integrated IACV means I can get rid of the whole rats nest under the plenum. Very attractive to me.

He is also supplying me my fuel rail as well.

Hey McFly,
I'd really like to more about the integrated IACV. I'm all about the K.I.S.S. method.

mcfly
09-29-2010, 05:03 PM
It's a GM thing. The LS1 uses a throttle body that has the IAC built right into the housing.

The LS engine line actually has drive by wire throttles to with this integrated system. ls1 is a three bolt flange but most aftermarket manifolds use the ls2 4 bolt flange and they are easy to get a hold of.

I myself will be using a 92mm LSX throttle with the 4 bolt and old school cable.
See the holes before and after the throttle plate, that is for the idle air. On big engine guys will drill a hole on the throttle plate to reduce whistle through the passage but it is not an issue for something as small as a 2.6L. You need a standalone to control the iacv for cold start and warm idle as it uses an electronic stepper motor.

I haven't been to this thread in awhile but it seems like it's moved along pretty quickly in the last few weeks.

Let us know how the porting goes, I had my ported but the guy did it by hand. He did a good job but he charged per hour and it worked to be pretty expensive. I'm wondering if the CNC is a better option cause it might end up cheaper and ports are more precise.

What standalone you going with?

Is this going to be a full out dragster?

mcfly
09-30-2010, 11:22 AM
We will see what the total comes to. The head is enroute from Japan to Texas so it's going to take a while.

I have not made a decision as to what standalone I will use. I will leave that until the very end. I'm acutally between Haltech and AEM v2 at the moment and leaning towards aem v2.

It is being built for drag but I want to be able to still take it out on weekends / evenings or even to work if I must.

mitch32
09-30-2010, 11:38 AM
Good stuff.

I'm running AEM EMS Series 1 (not much difference minus the datalogging can store more and password protection, which are two good things). I like the AEM but you need someone who knows the software well. Theres a lot of parameters to work with, unlike power fc or nistune which are very easy to work with.

Never had much experience with Haltech, it look good though.

Both the Haltech and the AEM have a serial port that works with an AIM dash. You can view all the data from the computer so you don't need gauges all over the place.

mcfly
09-30-2010, 12:12 PM
I have a stack dash :)

The AEM v2 is on the list because it has 6 coil drivers now. which the v1 did not. I had nothing but problems when I ran a v1 so i'm not sure what I will do when it comes down to it.

mitch32
09-30-2010, 01:37 PM
What kind of issues did you have?

I had issues at the beginning with overboosting/boost-creep. The ecu has an overboost fuel-cut setting, the tuner programmed boost at 20psi and the overboost at 22psi. I would then hit the rev-limiter and when I shifted gears the car would overboost hardcore like 28psi for a split second, so I get a crazy violent fuel-cut.

The new AEM actually now has 8 coil-drivers now. Just out of curiousity, why wouldn't you want to run wasted spark?

rb-racer
09-30-2010, 01:47 PM
the factory coils are very powerful but the waste spark with them = fail under big power or high rpm and with both it is worse.

I had big timing issues myself

mcfly
09-30-2010, 01:49 PM
I was having timing issues with my v1 as well. I finally just gave up and threw a stock ecu in because at the time that was all i needed.

COP is awesome, why get rid of it. If need be I can bump the voltage to the coils if i'm running out of spark.

mitch32
09-30-2010, 02:09 PM
Never thought wasted spark could cause such big issues. If the fuel is burned properly and pressure in the cylinder goes down when the exhaust valve is open, a re-ignition shouldn't occur. I'm no expert, just wondering why. Theres big power rb26 cars with Power FC and I'm sure Power FC runs wasted spark.

I know that the orginal AEM's had timing issues at high RPM's because of the 360 tooth CAS disc, but now they include the 24tooth disc (even with the sr20det ecu, and probably the vg30dett too). I had no timing issues, but I also ran the 24tooth disc from the start. At the very beginning we had trouble setting timing but I think thats normal it took like 10-15minutes.

COP is good, just sucks when the coils break cause they cost so much. I'm running orginal r32 rb26 coils in my motor and they work perfect, I'm also now around 18-19psi so spark shouldn't be blown with the 25thou gap I have on the plugs.

I found the biggest issue with waste spark is the dwell time is decreased as you now half the time between coil fires. I don't think its a BIG issue like you mentioned lots of cars running high power with it...but it can be a speed bump.

A tip as far as coils go, if you can't afford brand new ones try and find some off an RB20de. I ended up getting some and I figure they had less abuse on them and I scored with them.

mitch32
09-30-2010, 10:57 PM
I didn't think about that. Its true you divide the time between fires by 2 since its firing 2times more then it has to and at high rpm I guess they could come close to overlapping. So when do you know wasted spark is causing issues? Would you have pre-ignition happening randomly at high rpm? Are there coils that can eliminate the issues caused by running wasted spark at high rpm?

Sorry for the slight thread hijack Mcfly, it is relevant though :P

Haha, Rapier46 you seem angrier then usual.

Boomerang is good but doesn't discourage car thieves (or in this case pot smoking/dealing car jackers). Probably the best thing is boomerang, a 2-way car alarm with super loud horns, and a 12-gauge for when the 2-way alerts you that your car is being broken into.

we push started it, it is either the starter or the ignition wiring(likely the wiring as when you turn the switch to start it loses all power as if its missing a connection).
